The four components of a SMS are: Safety Policy — Establishes senior management's commitment to continually improve safety; defines the methods, processes, and organizational structure needed to meet safety goals Establishes management commitment to safety performance through SMS
Effective management demonstrates commitment when they: Set an example by making time and funds available for safety improvements. Modify rules and procedures when a better suggestion appears. Make themselves visible to and take an interest in employees. Follow the same rules set for all employees.
The Basic Components of a Safety Management System. According to the FAA, safety management systems always need to include four key components: Safety policies and objectives; Safety risk management; Safety assurance; Safety promotion. Within these components, there are 12 elements that ensure the successful implementation and upkeep of an SMS.
Key elements include leadership commitment, worker participation, hazard identification and risk assessment, legal and regulatory compliance, emergency planning, incident investigation and continual improvement. ISO 45001 utilizes the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology to systematically manage health and safety risks.
